Clipper, Trimmer, or Foil Shaver: What Belongs in the Chair
Most shops do not have a tool problem. They have a role problem. Clippers, trimmers, and foil shavers all cut hair. They do not do the same job. Mixing them up is how fades look muddy and how blades get abused.
LEAD is a Black-owned Atlanta barber and salon supply company. We stock professional clippers, trimmers, and shavers because a working chair needs all three. This is a clean way to think about the tools you actually pick up.
The clipper: bulk, shape, fade
A clipper is the workhorse. Guards, open-and-close levers, and a motor built for bulk are what take a head from long to a number and blend the sides. If the fade is the main event, start here. A classic example on our floor is the Wahl Magic Clip:
Browse more fade workhorses in our barber clippers, or pick up the shape and line tools together with a clipper and trimmer set.
The trimmer: edges, lines, detail
A trimmer is tighter and lighter. Hairlines, beards, around the ears, and the outline after the clipper has already set the shape. Do not ask a trimmer to fade a whole head all day. That is how motors heat up and blades chew.
Compare edge and detail tools in the trimmers collection. When a trimmer blade dulls, here is how to change an Andis T-Edjer or Outliner blade.
The foil shaver: skin-close finish
A foil shaver is not a clipper with a smaller blade. Foil heads sit against the skin and take residual hair after the clipper and trimmer. Bald fades, the nape, and that last pass on the sides belong here. The GAMMA+ XCeed Professional Cordless Shaver is the foil shaver on our floor:

A simple shop rule
Clipper builds the shape. Trimmer draws the line. Foil shaver finishes the skin. If a new barber on your team is dragging a foil across a full head of bulk, stop them. If they are trying to shave a hairline with a clipper, stop them too.
Stocking the station
Keep one reliable clipper, one trimmer, and one foil shaver on the chair, plus oil and disinfectant in reach. When you restock, use the Equipment Type filter on leadblacks.com so clippers, trimmers, and shavers do not get mixed in the same pile.
When a blade or foil wears out, swap it from replacement blades & foils. Shops in metro Atlanta can check barber supply delivery in Atlanta for local drop-off when it is available.
LEAD ships professional tools to shops that treat the chair like a business. Order what you actually use. If you are not sure which machine belongs in which slot, reach out and we will help you read the catalog.
