Monday Guard Check: BaBylissPRO Clipper & Trimmer Guards Before the Week’s Fades
Monday is the best day of the week to look hard at your guards. The shop is quieter, the book is still filling, and nobody is waiting in the chair while you dig for a #1.5 that cracked on Saturday. A guard with a chipped tooth, a weak clip, or a worn-off number does not announce itself until it leaves a line in a fade — or snags a client who trusted you with the back of their head. Five minutes on Monday morning saves that conversation.
LEAD Barber & Salon Supply is Black-owned. For us, by us. Professional barber and salon supplies for working chairs. This week’s station guide is simple: lay out every guard, check every tooth and clip, and replace what is worn before the week’s fades start. Browse on LEADBLACKS.COM.

Why guards deserve a Monday check
Guards are the most-handled, least-inspected tools on most stations. They get dropped, tossed in drawers, snapped on and off dozens of times a day, and cleaned in a hurry between clients. Over a busy weekend that wear adds up.
- Consistency. A guard that sits crooked or flexes on the blade does not cut the length printed on it. That shows up as uneven blending and extra passes.
- Client comfort. Broken or sharp teeth can catch skin and pull hair. Clients remember that feeling longer than they remember the cut.
- Speed. A complete, labeled set in order means you reach for the right length without checking twice. Missing sizes force workarounds that slow the whole day.
- Professional look. A clean, organized guard tray tells the client in your chair that the details are handled.
The Monday guard check, step by step
- Lay them all out in order. Clipper guards in one row, trimmer guards in another, smallest to largest. Gaps jump out right away.
- Inspect every tooth. Look for chips, cracks, bent or melted teeth, and rough edges. Run a fingertip lightly along the comb side — if it catches your finger, it will catch a client.
- Test the clip. Snap each guard onto the tool it belongs to. It should seat firmly with no wobble or side-to-side play. A loose clip is a replacement, not a “we’ll see.”
- Check the numbers. If a size marking has worn off, label it or retire it. Guessing lengths is how blends go wrong.
- Clean and disinfect. Brush out trapped hair, wash off product residue, then disinfect with your shop’s disinfectant following the label directions and the Georgia board rules your shop follows. Let them dry fully before they go back on the tray.
- Match sets to tools. Clipper guards and trimmer guards are not interchangeable. Keep each set with the tool it fits.
- Replace what failed. One cracked guard can be a single swap. A set with multiple worn clips is usually ready to be replaced as a set.
1) BaBylissPRO Premium Clipper Guard Set (FXPCG)
The BaBylissPRO Premium Guard Set FXPCG is BaBylissPRO’s eight-piece clipper guard set. Per BaBylissPRO’s published specs, it covers 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, uses fiberglass-reinforced nylon, and has a metal clip that holds the guard firmly on the blade. Extra teeth help feed hair into the blade for a cleaner pass.
Fit matters: the maker lists it for FX890, FX870, FX825, and FX673 clippers and most two-hole clipper blades. Check your clipper model against that list before you order. If you run BaBylissPRO clippers from our Clippers collection, this is the natural backup set. Check current price at LEADBLACKS.COM.
2) BaBylissPRO Premium Trimmer Guard Set (FXPTG)
Trimmer guards take a beating on beard work and tight tapers. The BaBylissPRO Premium Trimmer Guard Set FXPTG is a four-piece set in .5, 1, 1.5, and 2, with a gold metal clip and fiberglass-reinforced nylon. BaBylissPRO lists it for the FX797, FX787, and FX726 trimmers and notes it is built not to rub when the trimmer blade is zero-gapped — a detail that matters if you zero your trimmers for sharp line-ups.
Keep this set with your trimmer, not mixed into the clipper tray. More outlining tools live in our Trimmers collection. Check current price at LEADBLACKS.COM.
3) Combs for clipper-over-comb work
Not every cut runs on guards. When you blend by hand or shape a flat top, the comb is the guard. While you are checking teeth on Monday, check your combs too — the same cracked-tooth rule applies.
- Black Ice Carbon Barber Comb — an everyday cutting comb for clipper-over-comb and detail work.
- Black Ice Flat-Top Clipper Comb — for flat tops and level clipper-over-comb shaping.

FAQ
How often should barbers replace clipper guards?
There is no fixed calendar. Replace a guard when teeth are chipped, cracked, or bent, when the clip no longer seats firmly, or when the size marking is gone. A weekly Monday check makes those problems easy to catch before they show up in a cut.
Do BaBylissPRO clipper guards fit other clippers?
BaBylissPRO lists the FXPCG set for its FX890, FX870, FX825, and FX673 clippers and most two-hole clipper blades. Compatibility depends on your exact clipper and blade, so check your model before ordering. If you are unsure, email info@leadblacks.com with your clipper model.
What is the difference between clipper guards and trimmer guards?
Clipper guards are sized for clipper blades and cover a wider range of lengths for bulk work and fades. Trimmer guards are smaller, fit specific trimmers, and cover short lengths for beards, tapers, and detail work. They are not interchangeable.
How should I clean and disinfect guards?
Brush out hair, rinse off product residue, then disinfect with your shop’s disinfectant following the product label and your state board’s rules. Let guards dry completely before storing them so they do not trap moisture on the tray.
