Tuesday Blend Check: Smooth Fades With Guards, Lever, and Foil

Tuesday is a good day to tighten up the part of the cut clients notice first: the blend. A fade can have a sharp line-up and a clean top, but if you can see lines where one length meets the next, that's what people see. Here is a simple blending routine you can run on every fade, from a low taper to a bald fade.

1. Start with a clean, oiled clipper

Blending is hard with a dragging blade. Brush out hair, oil the blade, and make sure it's cutting clean before the client sits down. A dependable fade clipper like the Andis Fade Master or the Wahl Senior 2.0 gives you a strong base to work from.

2. Set your guide

Decide where the fade starts and set your guide line with the right guard. Work your way down in steps. A full, well-fitting set like the BaBylissPRO Premium Guard Set keeps each step consistent. Check that guards snap on snug so they don't shift mid-pass.

3. Work the lever between lengths

The lever is your best friend in a blend. Open it a little to get a length between two guards, and close it as you move down. Go back over each transition with the in-between setting until you can't see where one length stops and the next starts.

4. Flick out, don't push up

Instead of pushing the clipper straight up the head, use a short scooping or flicking motion out of the hair at each transition. Tilt the blade so only the corner works on stubborn spots. Small, light passes blend better than heavy ones.

5. Check it in good light, from every side

Step back. Look at the fade from the front, both sides, and the back, and use a hand mirror with the client. Lines and dark spots show up best under good light. Fix them now, not after the cape comes off.

6. Smooth the bottom with a foil

On skin and bald fades, a foil shaver can smooth the very bottom after your clipper work. The BaBylissPRO x Tomb45 Double-Foil Shaver is built for that finish. Keep the skin stretched, go light, and skip it on irritated or broken skin.

7. Keep the blade cool

A long blend can heat up your blade. A quick spray of Andis Cool Care Plus between steps helps keep it cool and clean. Follow the label and check the blade against your own wrist before it touches the client again.

FAQ

Why do I see lines in my fade?

Lines usually show up where two guard lengths meet and the transition wasn't softened. Go back over that area with the in-between length, or open and close the lever, and use a flicking motion out of the hair instead of pushing straight up.

Should I use the clipper lever or half guards?

Both work. The lever lets you get lengths between guards without switching attachments, and guards give you a consistent length every time. Many barbers use guards to set the guide and the lever to blend. Use what gives you clean results.

When should I bring out the foil shaver?

For skin and bald fades, a foil shaver can smooth the very bottom after your clipper work. Go light, keep the skin stretched, and skip it on irritated or broken skin.

How do I keep my clipper cool during a long blend?

Keep blades clean and oiled, and a quick spray of a coolant like Andis Cool Care Plus between steps helps. Follow the product's directions and check that the blade isn't getting hot against the client's skin.
