Friday Wave Clients: How to Cut and Line Up 360 Waves Without Losing the Pattern

Wave clients are some of the most loyal people in your chair. They brush for weeks, sleep in a durag, and they know their pattern better than anybody. So when they sit down on a Friday before the weekend, they are trusting you not to cut it off. Here is how to keep their waves sharp and send them out looking right.

LEAD Barber & Salon Supply is Black-owned. For us, by us. Shop at LEADBLACKS.COM. No invented prices here. Check current price on each product page.

1. Talk length before you touch the clipper

Ask how low they like it and when they last got cut. Some clients are in the middle of a wolf, letting it grow so the waves get deeper, and only want a line-up. Others want an even-out. Never assume. Cutting too low can wipe out weeks of brushing.

2. Read the grain

Run your hand over the head and look at how the hair lays in each section: the crown spiral, the sides, the front. Waves follow the direction the client brushes. Make a mental map before you start.

3. Pick the right guard and make sure it stays put

Use a guard length that matches what the client asked for and keeps enough hair to hold the pattern. Guards that slip mid-pass can leave a gap you cannot fix. Magnetic guards like JRL Double Magnetic Guards or a solid set like the BaBylissPRO Premium Guard Set help keep your length consistent from pass to pass.

4. Cut with the grain on top

For most wave clients, go with the grain on top so you even it out without cutting through the pattern. Use a dependable clipper with a smooth, steady cut, like the Andis Fade Master Clipper. Take light passes and check the shape often. You can always take more off. You cannot put it back.

5. Blend the sides and line it up

Keep the blend on the sides and back clean so the waves on top are the star. Then give them a crisp line-up. A sharp edge makes the pattern pop even more.

6. Keep your blades cool and clean

Friday chairs stay busy, and blades heat up. A spray like Andis Cool Care Plus helps cool and clean blades between clients. Follow the label and your state board's rules for cleaning tools.

7. Send them home with the right product

The cut is only half of it. Remind your client to brush, use a wave pomade, and wear a durag or wave cap at night. Keeping products on your shelf like Wavebuilder Night Form Pomade or SheaMoisture Men Waves Pomade makes it easy for them to stay on track, and it is extra money in your chair.

FAQ

What guard should I use for a wave client?

It depends on the client. Ask what length they like to wave at and look at their pattern. Many wave clients keep it low, but cutting too low can wipe out the pattern they have been brushing for weeks.

Should I cut with or against the grain on waves?

For most wave clients, cut with the grain on top so you keep the pattern. Going against the grain cuts closer and can take the waves down. Ask before you change it.

How often should a wave client get a cut?

A lot of wave clients come in every one to two weeks for a line-up and a light even-out. Talk with them about how they like to keep their length.

What should wave clients use at home?

A wave pomade or cream, a brush, and a durag or wave cap at night. Point them to products on your shelf or at LEADBLACKS.COM so they keep the pattern between visits.
