Sunday Heatless Stretch: Banding, Threading, or a Braid-Out for the Week
Shrinkage is normal for coily and kinky hair. But some weeks you want more length to work with: easier detangling, simpler puffs and buns, and less tugging on busy mornings. You do not need a blow dryer or flat iron to get there. Sunday evening is a good time to set a heatless stretch and let it work while you rest.

Step 1: Start with clean, damp hair
Stretch on damp hair, not dripping wet. Dripping-wet hair can take all night and then some to dry inside bands or braids. Keep a spray bottle close and mist any section that dries before you get to it. Detangle gently from ends to roots before you start.
Step 2: Leave-in for moisture
Work in sections. Smooth a leave-in through each one. SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In softens and helps with detangling, which makes the stretch go on smoother.
Step 3: A butter for hold and softness
Next, a little butter helps the stretch hold and keeps the hair soft when it dries. Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter is made for twisting and stretching styles. Use a small amount and focus on the length, not the scalp.
Step 4: Pick your method
Banding: Gather a section into a loose ponytail and place soft, snag-free hair ties down the length, an inch or two apart. Snug enough to hold, never tight at the root.
Threading: Wrap a section from root to end with soft thread or yarn. It gives a smooth, long stretch. Keep the wrap firm but not pulling.
Braid-out: Make four to eight big braids. Fewer braids give a looser, longer stretch. More braids give more texture when you take them down.
Whatever you pick, go easy on your edges. Tension at the hairline is the one thing to avoid.
Step 5: Seal the ends
Your ends are the oldest part of your hair. Smooth a few drops of African Pride Black Castor Miracle Sealing Oil over them to help lock in the moisture from your leave-in.
Step 6: Cover and let it dry all the way
Put on a bonnet like the Magic Ribbon Bonnet and sleep on it. In the morning, check that every section is fully dry. Taking it down damp brings the shrinkage right back.
Step 7: Gentle take-down
Rub a drop of oil on your fingertips. Remove the ties, thread, or braids slowly, then separate gently. Style into a puff, bun, or loose out style, and keep your hands out of it during the day.

FAQ
What does stretching natural hair mean?
It means loosening shrinkage so your hair hangs longer and is easier to detangle and style during the week. Heatless methods like banding, threading, and braid-outs do this without a blow dryer or flat iron.
Should my hair be wet or dry when I stretch it?
Damp is best for most people. Soaking-wet hair can take a very long time to dry in the stretch, and dry hair may not hold the stretch as well. Mist with water if a section dries before you get to it.
Can banding or threading damage my hair?
It can if the ties or thread are too tight. Keep tension light, especially at the roots and edges, and use soft, snag-free hair ties. If it hurts or pulls, loosen it.
How long will the stretch last?
It depends on your hair and how you sleep on it. Covering your hair at night with a bonnet and keeping your hands out of it during the day helps the stretch last longer.
