Thursday: Start Your Holiday List Now — and Make It Black-Owned on Purpose
It is only October, and the holidays already feel like they are coming fast. Every year a lot of us end up doing the same thing: waiting until the last minute, then grabbing whatever the biggest store has on the shelf. This year, try something different. Start your holiday list now, while you still have time to think, and decide ahead of time that as much of it as possible goes to Black-owned businesses. Starting early is what makes that easy instead of stressful.
LEAD Barber & Salon Supply is Black-owned. For us, by us. Browse at LEADBLACKS.COM.
Helpful first. Sales second. No invented statistics. No guilt.
Why start this early?
Last-minute shopping pushes us toward whatever is fastest, and that is usually not the small business down the street. Small Black-owned businesses often run lean, with small teams and limited room on the shelf. When you plan ahead, you give yourself time to find them, compare, ask questions, and order before the rush, and you give them time to take care of you. Early also means you can spread spending across a few paychecks instead of one stressful week.
Step 1: Write the list, not the cart
Before you buy anything, write down every person you plan to shop for. Next to each name, write one thing they actually use or love: their hair routine, their hobby, the shop where they get their cut. Gifts that fit someone’s real life get used. That is the whole point.
Step 2: Set your budget first
Decide what you can spend in total, then split it across your list. Buying Black-owned is not about spending more. It is about where the money you already planned to spend goes. A thoughtful small gift from a Black-owned business beats an expensive one you had to stretch for.
Step 3: Match each name to a Black-owned business
Go down your list and ask, “Who in our community makes or sells this?” A few places to start:
- Local barbershops and salons. Ask your barber or stylist if they offer gift cards or prepaid services. A fresh cut or a wash and style before a holiday event is a gift people remember.
- Black-owned restaurants, bakeries, and caterers for gatherings, office parties, and dessert tables.
- Black-owned bookstores, boutiques, and makers for the people who love something unique.
- Black-owned online shops for family out of town, so the gift ships straight to them.
Gift ideas from LEAD
LEAD is a Black-owned supply house for barbers, stylists, and everyday shoppers, and plenty of what we carry makes a solid gift. A few examples:
- For the barber, or the person who keeps their own lineup sharp: the BaBylissPRO Lo-ProFX Compact Clipper Trimmer & Shaver Set.
- For the wash-day person: Camille Rose Black Castor and Chebe Buttercream, a hair care treat for someone who takes their routine seriously.
- A small add-on for the barber or groomer: a Black Ice Carbon Barber Comb.

Step 4: Order early and ask questions
Small businesses are usually happy to help: a gift note, a recommendation, the right size or shade. Asking early, before the busy season, gives them room to do it right. If you are shipping to family, order with plenty of time so nobody is stressed in December, including the business owner.
Step 5: Talk about it
When you find a Black-owned business you love this season, tell people. Post the gift, tag the shop, and share the list with your family group chat. One person planning ahead can steer a whole family’s holiday spending toward businesses that hire locally and stay in the neighborhood. That is what community infrastructure looks like in real life: dollars that keep working close to home.
A Thursday challenge
Tonight, take ten minutes and write your holiday list. Next to each name, put one Black-owned business that could cover that gift. You do not have to buy anything yet. Just make the plan. Then share it with one person who will do it with you.
FAQ
Is it too early to start holiday shopping in October?
Not at all. Starting early gives you time to find Black-owned businesses, compare options, spread out your budget, and order before the rush.
Does buying Black-owned mean spending more?
No. It is about choosing where the money you already planned to spend goes. Set your budget first and stick to it.
How do I find Black-owned businesses for gifts?
Ask your barber, stylist, and friends where they shop, look for owners who share their story, check local directories, and follow Black-owned shops you already like on social media.
What is a good gift for a barber?
Tools and station upgrades they will actually use, like clipper and trimmer sets, quality combs, or finish products. If you are not sure, a gift card or prepaid service at their own shop also supports their business directly.
