Friday Lineup Ready: Trimmer Blade Clean, Oil, and Check Before the Weekend
The lineup is the part of the cut everybody sees first. On Friday and Saturday, your trimmer does more edge work than any other day, and a dry or worn blade shows up fast as pulling, heat, and a line that will not stay sharp. Five minutes before you open can save the whole weekend book.

Step 1: Clean it first
Power off. Brush out the hair between the teeth and around the blade. Oil on top of packed hair just makes paste. Then disinfect the blade the way your state board and the product label tell you. Clippercide Spray is a common station spray for clipper and trimmer blades.
Step 2: Oil it right
Once it is clean and dry, add a few drops of oil across the teeth, then run the trimmer for a few seconds so the oil spreads. Wipe off the extra so it does not land on a client’s skin. Keep Andis Clipper Oil at the station, and a larger bottle like Andis Oil Clipper/Trimmer 4 oz in the drawer so you never run dry on a Saturday.
Step 3: Check the teeth and the sound
- Look: chipped, bent, or missing teeth mean the blade comes off the station.
- Listen: a rattle or a louder hum than usual can mean a loose blade or a missed oiling.
- Feel: if it runs hot within a few minutes, stop, clean, and oil again.
- Test: run it on the back of your hand before the first client.
Step 4: Know when to replace
If the blade still pulls after a clean and oil, it is time for a new one. Blades are model-specific, so match the model number first. A few on LEADBLACKS.COM: BaBylissPRO FX703G Blade New FX3 Trimmer, Andis T-Edjer Trimmer Blade, and JRL Blade EZ-GAP ONYX Trimmer. Keeping a spare blade ready means a quick swap mid-rush instead of finishing lineups with a tool you do not trust.
A word on gapping
Adjusting the blade gap changes how close the trimmer cuts and how likely it is to nick. Only do it if you are trained to, follow the maker’s directions, and always test before it touches skin.
Set up the station with Barber Station Essentials.
FAQ
How often should I oil my trimmer blade?
Follow your trimmer’s manual. In a busy shop, many barbers add a few drops after cleaning and before the first cut of the day, and again whenever the blade runs hot or sounds rough.
Is zero-gapping safe?
Zero-gapping brings the cutting blade very close to the stationary blade, which raises the risk of nicks and irritation. Only adjust a blade if you are trained to, follow the maker’s directions, and test it before using it on a client.
When should I replace the trimmer blade instead of adjusting it?
If teeth are chipped or bent, the blade keeps pulling after cleaning and oil, or it still runs hot, a replacement blade is the safer choice.
Which replacement blade fits my trimmer?
Blades are model-specific. Match the model number on your trimmer to the replacement listing, or contact us with the model before ordering.
